Urban NMT Project Bratislava (Slovakia)

Despite the fact that the majority of urban households in Bratislava own a bicycle, cycling does not enjoy a significant modal share (approximately less than 0,5%) and there are no progressive policy to promote cycling. Fortunately, Bratislava has great potential to become a cycle- and pedestrian-friendly city. To reduce emissions from the urban transport sector, the NMT-component of the GEF project will aim to replace motorized trips to school or work with non-motorised means through the building of high-quality NMT infrastructure and by promoting non-motorised transport. The project funds will be used to develop detailed technical designs for several parts of the cycling network and link it to public transport. The construction of the facilities will be funded by the city. In November 2008 ITDP Europe assisted in the developement of a GEF Medium Sized Proposal on Sustainable Urban Transport in Bratislava (PT and NMT) together with the UNDP and ROM Consult.

Urban NMT Project Kosovo

In most cities in Kosovo cycling infrastructure is either fragmented or non-existing, is of low-quality, or isnot connected to the public transport network. Cycling is mainly used for recreational purposes and does not play a significant role in daily urban transportation purposes (commuting to work or school, shopping). Furthermore, because of a lack of municipal planning capacity and knowledge, municipal councils often oppose NMT infrastructure development and promotion. Few planners and decision-makers are aware of NMT's low implementation costs and its long-term impacts on the urban environment. Together with UNHABITAT and GTZ, ITDP Europe is assisting with the ongoing developement of a Bicycle Master Plan and Safe Routes to School Programs in six cities in Kosovo.

Urban NMT Project Gaborone (Botswana)

With an overall budget of 2.4 million USD, the UN GEF funded Project "Incorporating NMT Infrastructure in the City of Gaborone" had its kick-off stakeholder meeting in 2007, where ITDP Europe presented international experience on urban NMT and initiated a long-term partnership with the Holland-based Bicycle Partnership Program of Interface for Cycling Expertise (I-CE). The project promotes walking and cycling in Gaborone and facilitates a modal shift from motorized transport to nonmotorized transport modes over short distances. The parties have agreed upon a multi-stakeholder approach, involving civil society organisations, universities and partners from the public and private sector.

In November 2008 the bike-NGO "BEN Botswana" was established in cooperation with I-CE and BEN South Africa. The objective is to promote non-motorized transport and to establish a civil society organisation in the transport / cycling sector.
